More than 99 per cent of all organisms that have lived on Earth have died out. As new species evolve to fit constantly changing ecological conditions, older species that cannot adapt become extinct. At least a handful of times in the last 500 million years, 75 to more than 90 percent of all species have disappeared in the geological blink of an eye.
