Your article is very clear. The US exerts influence through force. China exerts influence through negotiation and diplomacy.

Many years ago I did a course in improvisational acting. I learned to respond in the moment, and not adhere to a rigid plan of what ‘should’ happen.

Later I trained with Moshe Feldenkrais. We practitioners help people move better (including kids with cerebral palsy) by improving the way of the brain coordinates body movement. We don’t try to fix symptoms, such as a painful left knee. We inquire: How does this person organize her body in such a way that she puts strain on her left knee but not on her right? What is she doing with her hips, her shoulders, her ankles? Then we intervene to make the whole system work better.

Generalizing, we can ask: How does the system – any system – operate to produce the symptoms we don’t want? I have applied this to psychotherapy. Now I apply it to catalyzing healthy cultural evolution.

DesignShops have been used for 40 years by companies with problems so severe that if they did not come up with an innovative approach, they might go out of business. As you would know, faced with tough problems many people want to immediately jump into solutions. DesignShop facilitators prevent this. Instead they spend the first day and a half of a three-day DesignShop looking at their situation from many different perspectives. This Scan develops a rich metal map that everybody shares. It lays the ground for coming up with an innovative new approach.

Sun Tsu said: Take account of the terrain. Also: The aim of war is to defeat the mind of the enemy general. Applying this to Pogo’s comment, we do well to aim to improve the thinking of the general populace.
